Environmental responsibility, renewable energy. Two buzz-phrases that have taken the world by storm in the fight against global warming.

The burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas has made the earth 1.1-degree Celsius warmer than just over a century ago. Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns have to be addressed.

That being the backdrop, Tanah Merah Country Club marked a significant milestone in its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) endeavours to bolster sustainability and advocate for renewable energy initiatives with the completion of the Solar Panel Installation Project at the Tampines location.

The official launch on January 26, 2024, was graced by Chris Chiu, the Club’s Vice-Captain and H&R Convenor who led the ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

The act symbolised the successful integration of clean energy solutions into the heart of the Tampines Course and marked the commitment of TMCC’s leadership to environmental responsibility. The milestone is also particularly noteworthy amid escalating energy costs and external inflationary pressures.

The planning and conceptual design of the solar system installation project was initiated in July 2023 and installation works commenced on October 12, 2023. The project took approximately 6 months to come to fruition.

There are a total of 1,172 solar panels installed, covering an area of 3,033 square metres on the roof of Tampines Clubhouse. Each solar panel comes with a system size of 673.9kWp, optimally generating energy in an hour of direct sunlight under perfect conditions.

The successful implementation of the solar panels at Tampines Course, saving approximately 842 MWh per year, is equivalent to powering around 200 average-sized households with electricity for an entire year. (Source: https://www.spgroup.com.sg/our-services/utilities/tariff-information)

This tangible example helps illustrate the substantial impact of the solar initiative on energy conservation. The estimated annual saving is S$0.2 million.

The solar panels deployed in this project boast high efficiency, utilising advanced photovoltaic technology to capture sunlight and convert it into electricity. The design and the layout of the PV panels on the roof of Tampines Course are also optimised to ensure high performance throughout the day, ensuring maximum efficiency whereas at the same time complying with the local authorities’ requirements.

The success of the TMCC Solar Panel project at Tampines Course serves as a stepping stone for future expansion at the Garden location. The Club is actively considering other ESG initiatives to further diversify its energy portfolio and continue its leadership in environmental responsibility.
