All fun and games at SG60 Texas Scramble event

Godfrey Robert

It was a golf event with a difference on Aug 20 at the Garden Course, from Ice Cream Carts to specially themed and curated novelty holes.

The golf challenge on a perfect day for 128 players in the SG60 Texas Scramble took a back seat because the programme highlights were driven by the organisers’ creativity and imagination.

So, there was the Rojak Roulette at Hole 4 where each golfer drew a card to determine which single club could be used for the entire hole (a putter was still allowed on the green).

Before tee-off at Hole 10, each player was given one try at tossinga mini kaya toast beanbag into the target, and for those successful received a children’s snack.

The Majulah Drive at Hole 13 was a Drive Challenge, where any ball finishing within the SG60 Zone earned the golfer a prize.

At Hole 16, the Merlion Hole Challenge rewarded golfers whose ball landed in the zone.

The Crab on Hole 17 was a popular event, marked by prizes for golfers who landed their ball inside giant crab circle on the green.

And it was prizes galore with a slew of items for the lucky draw, conducted in two segments, the top five prizes being a complimentary flight at TMCC (Raymond Lee), bottles of 18-year-old ChivasWhisky, bottle of Japanese Whisky, and a XXIO Boston Bag.

Novelty prize winners were Longest Drive Men (Tito Isaac), Women (Natasha Lye); Nearest-to-Pin Men (Chong Tat Chong), Women (Boo Geok Ching).

It was a close tussle in the competition proper with the quartet of Cheong Chow Yin, Hans Gunadi, John Ng and Eric Chok taking top honours with a net 50 score.

John Yak, Bryan Koh, Stanley Ang and Richard finished runners-upwith net 51, and the foursome of Steven Lee, Karen Wong, Yap Teck Seng and Esther Chew finished third on a net 52.

Former Singapore’s No. 1 Professional Quincy Quek led a team comprising Kan Kon Cheong, Lee Tze Yuan and Florence Chia to win the Best Pro Team category with a net 52.

The event was made possible thanks to the generosity of sponsors Acushnet Golf, Alicia Goh, Chivas, Dimple, Easy Life, House of Yi, Ladies sub-committee, Old Change Kee and Titleist.
