You watch in awe..
You admire, you remain transfixed, you capture the action.
In fact, sometimes you gawk too, in silent appreciation of a wonderful event.
Such is the magic of the Lion Dance which attracts hordes of people to its proceedings.
The performance is an annual fixture for Tanah Merah Country Club – initiated in the 1990s — during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
So they came. The members, the guests, the invitees; young and old to revel in the evening’s celebrations.
This time the performers came from the Yiwei Athletic Association (Singapore), an organisation established in 1999, well equipped by War Drums, leaping and stilting Lion Dance routines and an LED Dragon.
Renowned for showcasing advanced stunts, intricate routines, and unmatched energy, the lion dancers of Yiwei Athletic Association made history at the 14th Genting World Lion Dance Championship.
So in grand style of Saturday, Feb 8, the Yiwei performers – introduced by emcee and singer Vannessa Phang — set the stage for the club’s Chinese New Year Golf Challenge 2025 which turned out to be an overwhelming success.
The weather was perfect – partially sunny and with a relatively strong breeze that kept away the humidity.
The turnout was encouraging too — 123 players in 31 flights at the fabulous Tampines course – and it was prizes galore, thanks to a host of sponsors, including FootJoy, New Moon, Hugo Boss, TaylorMade and Marina Bay Sands.
The eight-course dinner, started with lo hei and some of the dishes include braised crabmeat soup to cod fish and crispy chicken to sauteed fresh scallops, was delectable.
But just before during dinner the LED dragon dance performance thrilled the enthusiastic crowd.
The main prizes were handed out by Club Captain Dr Goh Hoon Pur (Men’s) and Lady Captain Wendy Soh (Women’s). And the biggest winners were Tay Kok Ye in the Men’s Division and Norlia Embong in the Women’s Division, both winning $500 Hugo Boss vouchers.
Other winners were: Men’s runner-up Tian Hao, Third: Samir Bedi; and Women’s runner-up
Meylinda Setyo and Third: Wynnie Hajasi.
The opening prosperity draw winner, presented by the God of Fortune mascot, was June Yeo who won a $188 Garden View Restaurant voucher while the Events & Marketing Convenor Benny Tay gave away the lucky draw prizes.
The event came to a close at the Tampines Banquet Room at 9.30pm, but many members and guests stayed around for more banter and laughter as they rang in the Year of the Snake.
