Team names welcome change, but spirit remains the same

Team Asyad Match claims Nations Cup

Godfrey Robert

It sounds like a misnomer this time.

For the past few years, Nations Cup was an event true to its name with teams adopting country names, some members signalling patriotism.

Tanah Merah Country Club’s Nations Cup 2025 – at the Garden course on June 26 — had a slight twist with players stirring their imaginations while labelling their teams.

So it was no Singapore, or even South Korea or Japan, but Team Asyad Match, Team The Mighty Ones, Flower Power and even Team Iced Tiger Queens.

Team Awesome Foursome, Team Majulah Putters and Team Mulligan Man had a sync with golfing terms.

What’s in a name anyway, some may ask when the spirit of the competition remains the same.

But golf being a physical and mental game, the mind-stretching led to some wonderful team names that echoed with the theme of the competition.

And, seriously, the Nations Cup is all about fun and camaraderie, and enjoying a lavish spread of food and generous delivery of lucky draw prizes, 28 in all.

For the record, Team Asyad Match, with Alban Kang, Ong Sin Yee, Alan Zhang and Zhu Wong making up the foursome, finished clear winners among 27 flights with 115 points on the double peoria stableford, best three out of four players format.

Team The Mighty Ones (Tan T-Kiang, Liu Wei Guo, Ong Lay Ann and Melissa Sim) edged out Team Majulah Putters (Stanley Ang, Richard Chua, Cheng Dee Jee and Bryan Koh) for the runners-up spot on 113 points on countback.

The Best Dressed Team winners were the Iced Tiger Queens, comprising Boo Geok Ching, Wynnie Sim, Penny Yap and Celia Teh.

The top lucky draw prize of a Honma Beres Driver went to Jasmine Chew. Sarah Tan and Clement Tan prize winners of complimentary SICC golf voucher, while Lynnette Yeo and Rayner Madhavan prize winners of a complimentary flight at Aquella Golf & Country Club.

At the extensive international buffet dinner, entertaining live music was provided by Imelda and the Summertime Hotshots, a four-piece band.

The Club would like to thank event sponsors;

Aquella Golf & Country Club, APB, Dalmore, New Moon, Pernod Ricard, Pan West, SICC and Zappy.
