TMCC setting sustainability standards for the 2025 World Amateur Team Championships (WATC)

International Golf Federation

The International Golf Federation (IGF), in collaboration with the Singapore Golf Association (SGA), has announced a complete set of sustainability initiatives for the 2025 World Amateur Team Championships (WATC), currently being hosted at the Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC).

This global event is not only showcasing elite amateur golf, but also serving as a model for environmental responsibility in sports.

These initiatives are a key part of the IGF Sustainability Roadmap, developed in close collaboration with Sustainable Golf, a global leader in advancing sustainability in sport. The expertise of these partners has been instrumental in shaping and implementing impactful actions that align with international best practices.

Both Garden and Tampines Courses are GEO Certified®, affirming TMCC’s commitment to sustainable and responsible golf management.

Key Sustainability Highlights:

  • Certified Sustainable Venue: TMCC is proudly GEO Certified®, meeting the highest international standards for sustainable golf course operations.
  • Eco-Conscious Catering: Menus will feature local, organic, vegetarian, and vegan options. Caterers will use biodegradable or recyclable containers and eliminate single-use disposables, offering reusable crockery and cutlery with designated Return Points.
  • Plastic-Free Event: The WATC will be PET-free, with reusable water bottles provided to all players, volunteers, and referees. Water dispensers will be available throughout the venue and will remain as a legacy installation.
  • Food Waste Reduction: A food donation program will be implemented to support local food banks and eliminate waste.
  • Sustainable Retail: Plastic bags will be eliminated from all merchandise and retail stalls.
  • Green Transportation: IGF will consolidate athletes, staff and guest transportation, reducing shuttle bus frequency and even suspending the service for few hours, as well as promoting public transport to reduce emissions.
  • Digital-First Approach: The event will prioritize digital and reusable materials, minimizing printing and the use single-use items reducing the overall waste.
  • Nature Restoration Projects: In partnership with TMCC and under the Sport for Nature framework, IGF in collaboration with TMCC will install birdhouses to support the nesting and conservation of endemic bird species.
  • Carbon Tracking & Compensation: IGF will track and measure the event’s carbon footprint, with plans to implement compensation projects to achieve a net-positive environmental impact.
More than 20 birdhouses have been installed across the Tampines Course to provide safe habitats for local bird species.

Looking Ahead: Data-Driven Sustainability
To ensure transparency and continuous improvement, IGF will publish a 2025 World Amateur Team Championships comprehensive Sustainability Report in December 2025. This report will detail the environmental impact of the event, and the effectiveness of the initiatives implemented. The data collected will serve as a foundation to support and enhance sustainability efforts for future editions of the WATC, reinforcing IGF’s long-term commitment to responsible golf.

A Partnership for the Planet
“These initiatives reflect our deep commitment to sustainability and our belief that sport can be a powerful force for environmental good,” said, Antony Scanlon, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation. “With the guidance and support of Sustainable Golf, we are embedding sustainability into every aspect of the 2025 WATC and beyond.” The 2025 WATC will not only celebrate the world’s best amateur golfers but also demonstrate how major sporting events can lead the way in environmental stewardship.
